Unlocking Your Running Potential: How to Get Better at Running in Perth

Whether you're lacing up your sneakers for the first time and want to learn how to get better at running or you’re looking to level up your running game by discovering the best running tracks in Perth, you're in the right place.

The preferred form of exercise for around 23% of West Australians, running is fantastic for burning calories as well as helping to maintain a healthy weight, and a daily run will boost your mood, strengthen your bones and muscles and improve your cardiovascular fitness.

As you set your fitness goals for 2024, Hyperluxe is here to be your running buddy, guiding you through the streets of Perth while offering tips to ensure you look stylish and feel supported every step of the way.

Starting Out

If you're new to the running scene, welcome! Starting a running routine might seem daunting, but fear not, if you take it slow and steady you’ll be smashing out 5km+ jogs in no time.

Avoid the temptation to run an extended distance without building up your stamina first as that approach is a recipe for failure. It’s important to start slow and begin with a mix of walking and jogging to build up your fitness and ensure your body is ready for longer stretches of intense cardiovascular activity.

We suggest walking for one minute then running for two in the early days of your running era. As your body adjusts and you feel your stamina increasing, boost your running windows to three minutes, then four, and soon you won’t need to take walking breaks at all.

Set achievable goals, celebrate small victories and listen to your body. Consistency is key and soon you'll find yourself addicted to the runner's high.

Find the Right Footwear

When you’re starting out it’s important to invest in a good pair of running shoes that don’t compromise on quality. Trust us, your feet and knees will thank you!

Here at Hyperluxe we often recommend the Asics GT 2000 12 Sneaker to newbies entering the running scene, as this design offers high stability to support your joints across various distances. Available in sizes 7 to 11, the GT 2000 boasts a midsole with FF Blast Plus cushioning - a high tech design feature that provides a softer landing than other sneaker styles.

Running amateurs and experts alike consistently give the On Running Cloudnova sneaker a glowing review. Built with CloudTec - an advanced cushioning technology that reduces muscle fatigue, the Cloudnova style provides soft landings followed by powerful take offs so that you can run faster, for longer.

Top Tracks to Explore in Perth

We’re lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful corners of the planet, home to a plethora of running tracks, each with its own charm. From scenic coastal routes to lush parklands, West Australians are spoilt for choice when it comes to running tracks. These are some of our fave running tracks Perth:

Kings Park and Botanic Garden

Starting or finishing your day with a run at Kings Park and Botanic Garden, with abundant bush on one side and city views on the other, is hard to fault! The varied terrain - ranging from bitumen to gravel, concrete footpaths and plenty of long grassy stretches, keeps things interesting. And if you keep your eyes open, you’ll spot plenty of WA’s stunning flora and fauna along the way.

Jacob’s Ladder

When you’ve built up your running stamina you may even wish to venture just outside of Kings Park and Botanic Garden to give Jacob’s Ladder a crack. Be warned that this much loved staircase gets very busy in peak times and when there’s a lot of activity on the stairs, running up and down can be tricky.

Swan River Foreshore

A flat and scenic running route along the river, the Swan River foreshore offers a mix of urban and natural landscapes. For intermediate to advanced runners, the 10km Swan River Loop is a fantastic way to take in the city.

Starting at Elizabeth Quay and wrapping around the Swan River via the Barrack Street Jetty, Riverside Drive, South Perth foreshore and Causeway, this Loop is favoured by running clubs as well as cyclists. Just remember to stay left and keep your ears open for cyclists’ bells to avoid collisions!

Lake Monger

A popular spot for runners and walkers alike, one loop around Lake Monger is 3.5km in length, which is a great distance for newcomers to the sport.

Although it’s sandwiched between the freeway and Lake Monger Drive, thick vegetation and a beautiful view over the Lake makes this a serene spot, particularly at dawn. Come spring, keep your eyes peeled on the footpath for baby cygnets and freshly hatched turtles.

Both serve up a cracking coffee and abundant post run snack option.
